Key Person

David Park
Founder & Editor

David is the founder of Nippon Rain and oversees all editorial content. He is based in Seattle and travels to Japan regularly for research. He's the one who got caught in that typhoon in Osaka and decided the world needed better rain advice.

What We Do

Nippon Rain Media LLC is a digital media company focused on travel content. We publish editorial guides, articles, and resources for travelers visiting Japan, with a specific focus on weather preparedness and rainy season travel.

Our business model is straightforward: we provide free content on our website and sell a single downloadable PDF guide. We don't sell physical products, tours, or services. We don't operate a travel agency. We don't book accommodations or transportation on behalf of others.

We are not a licensed travel agency in any jurisdiction. We do not hold a travel business license in Washington State, Japan, or elsewhere. Our content is informational and educational only. We don't arrange travel, sell tickets, or provide travel agent services.

Our website covers topics including seasonal rainfall patterns across Japan, city-by-city climate comparisons, practical packing advice for wet weather, and honest assessments of what travelers should expect during Japan's various rainy seasons. We do not provide real-time weather forecasts, travel booking services, or personalized itinerary planning.

The company was founded in 2022 after David Park's personal travel blog posts about rain in Japan gained unexpected popularity on travel forums. Recognizing that no dedicated resource existed for this specific niche, he formalized the operation into Nippon Rain Media LLC and expanded the content with help from co-founders Yuki Tanaka and Rachel Kim. Since then, the site has grown to become a recognized resource for travelers planning trips to Japan during wet weather months.

We currently operate with a lean structure. David handles editorial direction and most writing from Seattle. Yuki contributes local expertise from Osaka and fact-checks culturally specific content. Rachel covers outdoor and hiking-related topics from Vancouver. We have no external investors, no board of directors, and no plans to scale beyond our current scope. We like it this way.

Company History

Nippon Rain Media LLC was formally established in early 2022, though the project's origins trace back to 2019 when founder David Park began publishing personal travel notes about rain in Japan on a small blog. The blog posts gained traction on travel forums like Reddit's r/JapanTravel and Lonely Planet's Thorn Tree, where readers consistently commented that no dedicated resource existed for this specific topic.

Recognizing the gap in travel content, David spent 2020 and 2021 (during the pandemic when Japan was closed to tourism) systematically researching and writing comprehensive guides based on his previous trips and historical weather data. Yuki Tanaka joined as co-founder in late 2021, bringing essential local knowledge and cultural context. Rachel Kim came on board as a contributor in 2023 after her detailed corrections to an outdoor hiking guide impressed the team.

The company officially launched nipponrain.com in March 2022, coinciding with Japan's gradual reopening to international tourism. Initial traffic was modest — a few hundred visitors per month — but grew organically through word of mouth and search engine indexing. By mid-2024, the site was serving tens of thousands of monthly visitors, with the downloadable PDF guide becoming a steady, if modest, revenue stream.

We've deliberately kept the company small and focused. We have no employees beyond the three co-founders, no outside investment, and no plans to scale aggressively. This lean structure allows us to maintain editorial independence and personal voice — qualities we believe are essential to the usefulness of our content. We're not trying to become a massive travel media empire. We're trying to be the absolute best resource for one very specific travel question.

Looking ahead, we plan to continue our current approach: regular research trips to Japan, twice-yearly content updates, and gradual expansion of our city coverage if warranted by reader demand. We may add one or two additional city guides in the coming years, but only if we can visit them personally and provide the same level of detailed, experience-based advice that defines our existing content.

We value sustainability over growth. The site generates enough revenue to fund our research trips and pay our modest hosting costs. We're not trying to maximize profit — we're trying to maximize usefulness. As long as readers keep finding our content helpful, we'll keep creating it. The day we start caring more about pageviews than about helping travelers stay dry is the day we should shut down.

Disclosures

Not a weather service: Nippon Rain is not a meteorological organization. We don't provide weather forecasts, warnings, or real-time conditions. Our content is based on historical data and personal travel experience. For actual weather forecasts, consult the Japan Meteorological Agency or other professional meteorological services.

Not a travel agency: We are not a travel agency and we don't sell tours, hotels, flights, or travel packages. We don't hold a travel agency license. Any travel arrangements you make are your own responsibility.

No government affiliation: We are not affiliated with the Japanese government, the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), or any government tourism body. We're an independent private company with no ties to public sector organizations in any country.

Content accuracy: We make reasonable efforts to ensure our content is accurate and up to date. However, weather patterns change, businesses close, and conditions evolve. We can't guarantee everything on this site is current at all times. Climate data shifts year to year, and what was true when we published a guide may not reflect current conditions. If you spot an error, outdated information, or a closed business mentioned in our content, please contact us and we'll investigate.

Editorial independence: Our content is not influenced by advertisers, sponsors, or commercial partners because we don't have any. We don't accept sponsored posts, paid placements, or free products in exchange for coverage. All product mentions and recommendations are based on our own purchasing and testing. This independence is fundamental to our operation and something we take seriously.

Our Business Model

Nippon Rain operates on a simple direct-to-reader model. We publish free articles that anyone can read without registration or payment. No paywalls. No premium tiers. No "sign up to read more." The full content of every article is available to all visitors.

We generate revenue through a single product: "The Complete Rain-Ready Japan Guide," a downloadable PDF that compiles our most useful advice into a printable, offline-friendly format. This PDF is priced at $9 and is available for purchase through our website. It includes month-by-month rainfall tables, city comparison charts, packing checklists, and emergency rain tips formatted for easy printing and travel reference.

We chose this model deliberately. Advertising would require tracking visitors and showing potentially irrelevant promotions. Affiliate links would create conflicts of interest in our recommendations. Subscription models would exclude readers who can't afford them. A single, affordable PDF purchase from readers who find our free content valuable feels like the cleanest approach. About one in two hundred visitors buys the PDF, which is enough to keep the site running and fund our research trips.

We have no plans to expand our product line, add subscription tiers, or introduce advertising. The current model works for our needs and aligns with our values. If that ever changes, we'll be transparent about it and announce any shifts well in advance.
